L'Oreal SA of Paris, France, which was established in 1909, is the largest cosmetics company in the world. The company's founder, Eugene Schuller, invented the first synthetic hair colourant. Until 1936, the company concentrated in hair care. In the 1960s and 1970s, the company expanded into the cosmetics and toiletries market with several acquisitions. The company now holds a dominant presence in a number of European markets, with about 63% of total cosmetics sales generated in Europe. The company's strong presence in Europe allows it to have a degree of price control and better shelf space. The company is also well established in Latin America. The company plans to expand in the US with its Maybelline line.

The company accounts for modest value shares of the French, Italian, UK and Spanish markets, with 4.5%, 0.9%, 0.4% and 5.7% share respectively. The company ranked number four in the German market in 1996, with a 6.1% value share. Its Aok brand held 3.9% share. The company's cosmetics and toiletries turnover almost doubled to DM1,314 million in the first half od 1996 through the acquisition of Schwarzkopf.
