IBM has given in to market pressures and is producing low-price clones of its own personal computers and selling them with out the high-cost services offered with genuine IBM computers. Regional services offered by IBM have been replaced by cost-effective centralized phone service.

IBM was the industry leader while its mainframe computers were the corporate standard. IBM miscalculated when it entered the personal computer market and left technical standards in control of suppliers. This resulted in numerous firms producing IBM 'clones.'

Personal computers that are left on while not in use account for a great deal of energy waste. Intel Corp has developed a new chip technology that allows computers to be turned off but still remain in contact with a network. IBM's new desktop uses that chip.
