Competing for capital
Article Abstract:
Political instability isstrongly connected with investor approval and this has been made evident by theeffects following the violent Thai riots against its military-backed government Aside from Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines have also seen lower investment approvals in 1991. On the other hand, Singapore and Indonesia continued to have greater levels of capital inflow through foreign investments. These Southeast Asian countries will have to contend, however, with tighter competition for capital in the coming years because of capital scarcity and changes in the investment climate.

Latin lessons for Asia
Article Abstract:
The Southeast Asian economies, suffering in the wake of the Thai baht crisis, could learn from mistakes made in the 1982 Latin American crisis, and the different responses to the 1994 Mexican peso crisis. The background to the earlier Latin American crisis was similar to that in Southeast Asia, but everyone responded by blaming investors and expecting them to shoulder the burden of economic rescue. This resulted in seven years of poor investment and economic hardship. They responded differently to the 1994 crisis, and this proved to be severe but short-lived.

Fast money
Article Abstract:
Portfolio investment in Asia has helped power an economic boom but forces an unsavory choice on central banks that want to avoid currency appreciation, which can hurt exports. Most avoid this by boosting foreign reserves, but that portends a sharp increase in domestic credit and soaring numbers of bad loans. More will have to consider the alternative of placing limits on foreign non-direct investment, perhaps with higher taxes or limits on how fast it can leave the country. Mexico did neither, and suffered in 1994-95.
