Competitors join forces in e-business ventures

Airports United, whose 'dot-com' website will provide airport and travel- related information to passengers, has been officially launched. The company, established by Brussels International Airport Co and its fully owned ICT subsidiary SwITch, offers a business-to-consumer service that will guide passengers to individual airport websites, and will provide information such as real-time flight details, ticketing, hotels, car rental, tours and other travel products. Airport United is expected to compete directly with BAA's AirportSmart.com and WorldAirports.com portals.

New signals from Galileo

The European team of companies that have collaborated to establish Galileo Industries have formally inaugurated the company in Brussels, Belgium, in May 2000. The company has been set up to focus on implementing a satellite navigation system proposed by the European Space Agency and the European Commission. The consortium is comprised of Alcatel Space, Alenia Spazio and Astrium, a joint venture between Daimler Chrysler Aerospace, Aerospatiale and BAE Systems.

Explosive sales

Heimann Systems has received more orders for its explosive detection equipment worth some 4.9 million euros. Brussels International Airport Co has ordered 10 x-ray HI-SCAN 10080 EDS systems for automatic hold luggage screening, with installation due by yearend 2001. The order opens up the possibility of further orders under a planned second phase development by the airport that handled 20 million passengers in 2000.
