Computers and wages
Article Abstract:
Information technology has been seen as a cause of wage inequality due to a drop in demand for unskilled employees and a rise in the productivity of workers using computers, allowing them to be paid more. Yet wage inequality started to increase before personal computers started to be widely used. Front-office jobs have become more improtant as a result of computers, and managers need to use more skills as organizations change. Predictions of how wages will evolve are difficult to make since it is not easy to forecast future demand for skills, though there is likely to be more demand for social skills.

A dip in the valley
Article Abstract:
Silicon Valley is affected by changes in stock prices, and employees often receive stock options in addition to salaries. A drop in stock prices causes concern in Silicon Valley, especially when it affects Dell, Microsoft, and other stocks seen as safe, rather than internet stocks such as Excite, which have risen sharply. Exports to Asia have been hit, as have semiconductor companies. Venture capital may become more difficult to obtain if stock prices drop further.

Gentle giants: technology can create near-monopolies, that is sometimes a good thing
Article Abstract:
Technology companies that control large market shares are able to do so as long as they cause the market to continue expanding. The fast expansion of technology makes it more difficult to determine industry standards, and the popularity of certain products makes technological advances better.
