Concerns over rule of law after '97 mount in colony
Article Abstract:
Many Hong Kong businesses are concerned over the possible disregard for the colony's laws after it returns to Chinese rule in 1997. Anxiety over the prospects for legal protection for Hong Kong businesses under Chinese rule is further heightened by doubts about whether a special court will be formed during the transition period. Legal experts believe that such anxiety are warranted, noting a provision in China's Basic Law which stipulates that final rulings on Hong Kong lawsuits will be determined by the National People's Congress. Meanwhile, many Hong Kong businesses are already making contingency plans to move out of the colony if legal protection is not afforded to them.

China sparks colony fears with abduction of seamen
Article Abstract:
A recent incident which saw Chinese marine police entering Hong Kong waters to arrest two suspected smugglers has raised fears regarding the colony's autonomy when it reverts back to Chinese control in 1997. In the incident, which occurred in Mar. 1995, a Chinese police speedboat entered the colony's territorial waters and forcibly escorted two Hong Kong vessels to its base in Zhuhai despite protests from Hong Kong police. Critics accuse the Hong Kong government of shirking its responsibility to police the colony's borders.
