Conciliatory approach helps ASEAN, China to mend ties
Article Abstract:
The recent meeting between the Assn. of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers and Chinese officials has helped improve relations between the two entities. ASEAN-Sino relations had earlier been strained by the Spratly Island dispute and China's decision to renew nuclear testing. During the meeting, however, China expressed its commitment to recognize international sea laws, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, as the basis for claims settlement negotiations. Moreover, it expressed its desire to establish joint exploration of the resources of the disputed island chain.

Organization adds diversity, discord to myriad strains; economic crisis, political change and expanded membership pose challenge to once cozy club
Article Abstract:
The Assn of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) is on the brink of reinventing itself once again due to debates over the admission of Cambodia into its fold. Through its 31 years of existence, Asean has managed to adapt itself to situations including coups, economic good times, economic bad times and wars. The signs of discord over the latest summit bode ill for the organization whose ability to cope with diversity may either be strengthened or weakened, eroding its clout with other groups.

Court brings Repco's future in gambling into question
Article Abstract:
Malaysian firm Repco Holdings Bhd. is awaiting a court decision on the legality of Sababumi Sdn. Bhd.'s operation of a gambling concession given by the government. The legal outcome would centrally affect Repco Holdings' gambling business as it runs operations with similar arrangements as those of Sababumi. It runs public lotteries under contract with the Turf Club which, incidentally, is the complainant in the Sababumi case.
