Confidence, cash calls and a fear of foreign investment
Article Abstract:
There have been mixed developments recently within the consolidation and merger sector in the Asia Pacific region. Moves at the end of 1995 by the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) to establish new trading and listing regulations for the B-share markets in Shanghai and Shenzhen have served to boost investor confidence in China. In Australia, the forthcoming election could have an impact on foreign merger and acquisition activity, while in Hong Kong companies are looking once again at the possibility of making share placements.

Asia: Summer sales
Article Abstract:
Asian governments are keeping up to 150 regional banks afloat by financial aid which will inevitably lead to falling share prices and a worsening of market conditions. US brokers believe the market has almost reached rock bottom, encouraging investment in collapsed firms. Over $650 million was raised by US-based George Soros for a series of investments in Thailand and Asia. The purchase of two major Japanese financial institutions indicates an opening up of the market to foreign buyers.
