Many experts are saying that conglomerates have become unwieldy, and that their size and complexity makes them difficult to manage. This may well be the case, but there are a number of conglomerates that are doing quite well. There seems to be no agreement as to the proper conglomerate size.

Ratan Tata's efforts to modernize the Indian business conglomerate, Tata Sons, have paid off. In 1991, Tata took over the family conglomerate and become chairman of three of the 70 companies under the family name. The 50-year-old Tata has had success by opening up to foreign alliances.
