Conservation technology
Article Abstract:
Building conservation is a major and profitable part of the construction maintenance and refurbishment sector. All architectural practices are now interested in undertaking building conservation, but only 27% were interested before the recession. Such conservation work should involve only essential repairs, which can be reversed. Architects undertaking such work should check on deterioration rates, and take historic processes and materials into account. Lists of publications, contacts, training courses and places connected with conservation are also presented.

Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts
Article Abstract:
The conversion and extension of the old Liverpool Institute for Boys into an institute for performing arts is described. Architect was Brock Carmichael Associates, with main contractor Balfour Beatty Building. The Fullflow syphonic drainage system from Syphonics was used for the flat roofs, and Broderick provided the tern-coated roofing. The external plastering used a French system by SBD, and internally the main auditorium seating supplier was Audience Seating.

Accommodating the disabled: with parts of the Disability Discrimination Act now in force, employment practices and increasingly the design of buildings will change
Article Abstract:
The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) will profoundly effect the design of buildings. Disabled job applicants must not be treated less favourably than others, therefore employers may have to make adjustments to premises, such as widening doorways, providing ramps, and re-siting light switches and door handles. Providers of goods and services need to identify access improvements and include them in proposed building maintenance programmes.
