Controllers add a new dimension
Article Abstract:
Dimensions, a company based in France, has developed a thunderstorm-hazards-forecasting system called Safir, which is intended to offer a synthetic map of dangerous storm areas for the controller. In 1995, the company teamed up with the French civil aviation authority with the aim of creating a display offering accurate information about thunderstorm hazards. Using the Safir, the controller can expect air traffic perturbations and derive precise storm-forecast data, on the principle of a go/no go coding of the mapping of stormy areas.

France slow but sure
Article Abstract:
France is in the last phase of its air traffic control modernization program, with four of five air traffic control centers having installed new controller displays and new software using human-machine-interface tools for the first time. The center at Bordeaux will complete the nationwide program in 2003, when its construction is finished. The nearly 10-year program has set new standards in using a phased approach to achieve its objectives.
