Generic drugs which are exactly the same as brand name drugs but much less expensive have been capturing a growing market share in the pharmaceutical industry. Merck has decided to market both the brand name and generic versions of their same products.

Profits over the counter: the drug industry

Drug companies are expanding into over-the-counter (OTC) drugs since their huge profits are being threatened by patent expirations and government price controls. Many drugs are awaiting approval for the OTC market, a move that often doubles sales.
