Court orders Jakarta to restore Tempo's permit
Article Abstract:
The Jakarta State Administrative Court has overturned the decision of Information Min. Harmoko to close Tempo magazine in Jun. 1994. A three-judge panel at the court has also ruled that the magazine's publishing permit be reissued. The case stemmed an order by Harmoko to shut down the magazine under a 1984 ministerial decree. The court, however, ruled that the decree is contrary to a 1982 law on press freedom. The magazine's permit may not be readily restored though, as the Information Dept. reserves the right to keep it until the ruling has become final.

The disappearance of Swa
Article Abstract:
The apparent disappearance of a magazine's issue in Indonesia raises questions on the status of freedom of information in the country. The magazine issue was to expose a scandal and two unidentified buyers went to the Swa, the news agents handling the circulation, to buy all the issues before it went to the newstands. A similar case also involving a scandal also had the same results. These activities raise questions on how information and how suppression such as this should be handled.

Indonesian group to publish journal despite arrests
Article Abstract:
The Alliance of Independent Journalists reaffirmed its commitment to publish its unlicensed magazine, Independen, despite the arrest of three of its members. The Indonesian police arrested the three members in an attempt to stop the magazine's publication, which it deemed illegal because it had no government permit. Meanwhile, local and foreign human rights groups criticized the Indonesian government for its efforts to stop the magazine's publication.
