Court vetoes Air France subsidy ruling
Article Abstract:
Air France's state aid of 20 billion francs, which was approved by the European Commission in 1994, has been nullified by a European Union court. The European Court of First Instance in Luxembourg said the European Commission failed to present sufficient justification for two significant aspects of its 1994 ruling. According to the court, the commission did not provide enough justification for allowing Air France to buy 17 new aircraft for a total of 11.5 billion French francs. In addition, it did not cover the effect that the aid could have on feeder flights operated by smaller carriers into Charles de Gaulle airport and on routes outside Europe.

EU to unveil this week limits on British Air deal
Article Abstract:
British Airways and AMR Corp.'s American Airlines are expected to be required by the European Commission to meet certain conditions to gain the European Union's support for their planned partnership. Among these conditions are the reduction of the number of flights on certain trans-Atlantic routes by as much as 55%, and the unloading of almost 270 weekly landing and takeoff slots. The commission is also going to put down requirements on the carriers' use of frequent-flyer programs, computer reservations systems and agreements with travel agents to cut back on the potential for a weakening of competition.

EU Commission to launch investigation into proposed BP Amoco, Arco merger
Article Abstract:
BP Amoco PLC's planned purchase of Atlantic Richfield Co. (ARCO) is being investigated by the European Commission (EC). The EC began an in-depth probe into the proposed deal. The probe reflects the EC's concerns about the speed of consolidation taking place within the global oil industry. The EC is worried that the series of mergers within the oil industry will create an "oligopoly" in the area of crude-oil exploration.
