JCO faced price pressures
Article Abstract:
JCO Co, the operator of the nuclear fuel-processing facility responsible for one of Japan's biggest nuclear-related accidents, is said to have been under immense pressure to cut costs. Analyses of the accident, which has been blamed on JCO's incompetent management style and on human error, tend to support the theory that the pressure to remain competitive with nuclear fuel suppliers from Germany, France and the US, has forced the firm's management and employees to resort to risky cost-cutting efforts.

Problems waiting to happen: parts companies may hurt Japan auto makers
Article Abstract:
Analysts caution investors about the risks of investing in Japanese automobile manufacturers. Most Japanese carmakers depend heavily on domestic parts suppliers. However, the decline in automobile sales has reduced production and increased suppliers' fixed costs which may, in turn, harm the global competitiveness of Japanese manufacturers. Aggravating the situation is the improved competitiveness being enjoyed by US and European parts suppliers through mergers and acquisitions.
