Creative businessman
Article Abstract:
Francois Pinault has set up a business empire over 40 years, and his assets have been estimated as worth around 12.7 billion US dollars. His retail chains include Fnac and Printemps. He has been cited in a lawsuit involving fraud allegations in the US, and he appears to have filed information that is misleading and incorrect. This appears to have been done in a way that reduces his French tax bill. He appears to be very wealthy, but his empire has a private side with a large amount of debt and no cash.

Article Abstract:
Carrefour plans to open a hypermarket in Japan in 2000, while Gap and Toys R Us are expanding in Japan. Japanese retail sales have dropped, but so too have land prices, and deregulation also attracts foreign investors. Foreign companies have been able to bypass middlemen, in contrast to the expensive distribition used by Japanese retailers, which is gradually changing as wholesalers consolidate. Specialist foreign retailers are likely to find easier market conditions than generalists such as Wal-Mart.
