Creeping up
Article Abstract:
The Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) is a continuation of the former communists of East Germany, and it has seen a rise in electoral support in eastern Germany since reunification. Opinion polls give a figure as high as 29% of voters on eastern Germany supporting the PDS. The Social Democrats have moved toward the center, leaving a gap that the PDS is seeking to exploit. Some Greens have also joined the PDS. There are differences in living standards between eastern and western Germany, although conditions have improved in eastern Germany.

Joschka Fischer, a sterner shade of Green
Article Abstract:
German foreign minister, Joschka Fischer, faces a difficult task at the time of the conflict in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, yet he has performed well in opinion polls. He has launched a plan for peace which has been hampered by the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia. His view on whether Germany should take part in international peace keeping operations changed after the massacre in Srebrenica, Bosnia, in 1995. The German coalition government would be hit if Joschka, a Green were to resign over Kosovo.

See no evil
Article Abstract:
The Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS), formed by former communists in eastern Germany, is regarded with great suspicion in western Germany. Indeed, some western Germans even believe that it should be banned. PDS leaders have views much further to the left of those of any other German party, but seem to be moving towards social democracy, distancing themselves from radicals. However, most of the party's 110,000 members still wish to see a return to the Marxism of the old East Germany.
