Crying all the way from the bank
Article Abstract:
It is very common in the UK for small businesses to find it very difficult to persuade banks to lend them money. Only one in three small businesses has a term loan from their bank, according to the Federation of Small Businesses, while 65% of small and medium-sized companies rely on overdraft facilities. They cut their need for capital by leasing equipment, rather than purchasing it. Small businesses have little choice of bank, and this means that banks are tempted to overcharge small businesses whenever possible. The government is now seeking to offer more to small companies.

However only four public offers have been made under the scheme raising less than 1 million pounds sterling. The scheme has been criticised as having complex legislation.
