Hong Kong business magnate Lawrence Kadoorie and his China Light and Power Company Ltd have survived difficult times such as he threat of nationalization. The company has expanded its service area and even supplies mailand China with some electricity. Among utilities, it stands out in terms of profitability. Kadoorie foresees his company eventually becoming a substation in Mainland China upon its reacquisition of Hong Kong.

Taiwan's state-controlled banks feel helpless in the face of competition. While the new private banks freely make profit, state-owned banks are hampered by bureaucracy. Legislation pends in parliament for the privatization of state-owned banks but their history of inefficiency and political patronage does not inspire public confidence.
