Both IBM Corp and Compaq Computer Corp are both trying to regain market share lost because of the price cuts of smaller competitors. The European operation of IBM will begin to import cheaper 'clones' of its popular computers. Compaq is cutting product and distribution costs and improving services.

The downsizing and cost-cutting accomplished by the former IBM subsidiary Lexmark have made the printer and typewriter manufacturer a profitable firm. Lexmar reduced the old IBM management staff by over 50% by giving line managers more decision making authority.
