DAEWOO READIES FOR HUGE HIKES IN PRODUCTION

Daewoo Motor India Limited (DMIL), a car producer, plans to manufacture 85,000 cars, 2.5 lakh engines and gear boxes each in the next 3 years. It proposes to make 1 lakh each of engine and gear boxes during 1998-99. It will be raising the production of these by 50,000 each year to make 2.5 lakh units during 2001-2002 AD. DMIL will produce 10,000 Cielo cars during 1998-99, 15,000 cars during 1999-2000 and 20,000 by 2001-2002. It plans to make 60,000 Matiz model cars, its new small car, during the first year, 65,000 in the second year and maintain the level till 2001 AD. It also plans to invest Rs350 crore more in the next 3 years. (ag)

PAL-PEUGEOT STOPS VICEROY PRODUCTION

PAL Peugeot Ltd (PPL), the joint venture between Automobiles Peugeot of France and Premier Automobiles Ltd (PAL), has stopped the production of the Viceroy, the rechristened 118NE, due to fall in demand for the model. The car is fitted with a Nissan engine and the seats and trims are from Peugeot 309. The joint venture's operations at the Kalyan plant have come close to a standstill, with the production of 118NE and 1.38D reduced to 200 cars per month from around 900 per month. The number of working days also has come down to two days per week. (gsh)

Article Abstract:
Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) of South Korea has identified India as a major production base. India is HMC's largest investment centre outside Korea. HMC has drawn up a localisation strategy for Indian market. The strategy includes setting up car manufacturing plants and indigenising components. The integrated plant will have all facilities including a self-sufficient manufacturing site for cars. HMC plans to make India as the only manufacturing base for its cars.
