DENMARK: DANSK SUPERMARKED ADOPTS NEW STRATEGY
Article Abstract:
Dansk Supermarked, which is the biggest grocery retail chain in Denmark, is to adopt a new strategy following a survey indicating that loyalty among its customers is weakening. The chain's top executive Erling Jensen says its customer loyalty strategy is simple: to focus on improved customer service and make employees more aware of its importance. Jensen disagrees with the criticism levelled by the retail trade expert Per Gronning who says Danish retail chains are making no progress as regards new business areas such as ready meals. He says Dansk Supermarket is testing a ready meal concept in one of its stores and if it proves successful the concept will be extended to other stores as well. According to Jensen, one has to decide on the type of ready meals to focus on as the usual cafeteria meals are losing foothold and the demand for more wholesome foods is on the rise.

DENMARK: DANSK SUPERMARKED'S 1998/99 RESULTS
Article Abstract:
Dansk Supermarked, the major Danish retail group, reports a DKr 917mn (USD 121mn) net profit for the fiscal 1998/99, up from DKr 649mn in 1997/98. Dkr 90mn of the improvement is attributed to taxation issues. Turnover increased to DKr 33.2bn from DKr 30.5bn. For 1999/2000, the group anticipates a lower turnover growth, 2-3% compared with 9%, as consumption in Denmark is stagnating. As a consequence, Dansk Supermarked will increase the focus on cost cuts.
