DENMARK: QUALITY LABELING A FAILURE
Article Abstract:
Landsforeningen af Danske Svineproducenter, the association of Danish pig farmers, considers the Food Ministry's system for quality labeling of meat being a complete failure, and suggests that it is abolished. Kent Skaaning, chairman of the association, says it's not the Government's task to define what is quality, and adds that the system prevents development and dynamism. He thinks such a system should be worked out by pig producers and consumers. The labeling system is relatively new and has not yet began to break through among consumers, the paper writes.

DENMARK: EASIER EXPORT WITHOUT NITRITE BAN
Article Abstract:
The EU Commission rejects Denmark's special regulations for the use of nitrite in meat. In 1995, the EU decided that up to 150 mg of nitrite could be added per kg of meat, but Denmark would only allow 60 mg/kg. This has led to problems in the export industry, especially since the US demands that at least 120 mg are added. As Danish meat producers are now allowed to add up to 150 mg, production for the Danish and foreign markets no longer need to be separated.
