DENMARK: SECURITY FLAW IN E-COMMERCE
Article Abstract:
The Danish Internet company Canvas Interactive has found a serious security flaw in the payment system Dankortet for e-commerce over the Internet. The flaw means that consumers with an ounce of computer knowledge easily could order goods without ever paying for it. The fact that the consumer hasn't paid will, in most cases, not be revealed until the goods have already been delivered. The payment system is supposed to work like this; PBS (the company that administrates Dankortet) checks if the card number submitted is OK and that there is money on the account. Then PBS confirms to the e-commerce company, which in turn sends a receipt to the customer and then carries out the order. Because of the security flaw it's possible to trick the system into believing the card has been checked at PBS, which it hasn't. The e-commerce company will not discover that the customer hasn't paid until they are supposed to receive the money from PBS.
