DENMARK: UNIT LINK SAVINGS EXPECTED TO DECLINE
Article Abstract:
Savings in unit-linked funds tripled last year compared with the previous year. During 2000 Danes placed DKr1,878mn in different unit-linked funds, compared with Dkr627mn during 1999. It is especially the new actor, Skandia that has impressed, writes the newspaper. Skandia succeeded, despite a weak brand name, to attract Dkr385mn in premiums during last year (Dkr177mn). The newspaper speculates on the possibility that the strong development for unit-linked funds can diminish. The reason for this is that pensions companies are offering record high guaranteed-savings rates. For the current year the companies have notified that rates will lie between 8.5 and 10.5%, after tax. Also many Danes have lost money in private share dealings in connection with the downturn in the IT branch. These two factors, say the newspaper, speak against a continued good development for unit-linked funds.

Denmark: Less confidence in pension companies
Article Abstract:
A new survey from Greens Analyseinstitut shows that the Danes have become more critical toward pension savings and the pension sector. Only 10 percent of the population plans to increase their pension savings, compared to 29 percent at the beginning of the year. According to pensions manager at AON Consult, Jens Murer, this is because people prefer to hold on to their money rather than putting it into different savings alternatives such as unit-link investments at a time when many fear a coming recession. The number of Danes with pension savings has fallen from 77 percent at the beginning of the year to 68 percent today, according to the survey.

DENMARK: INCREASED INTEREST IN UNIT-LINK
Article Abstract:
Most Danish pension companies are experiencing an increased interest in unit-link products. Some even choose to base their pension savings entirely on unit-link. Most of the growth is taking place in the business area where customers are offered the opportunity to combine traditional pension schemes with unit-link products. SkandiaLink, which has approximately 10 per cent of the market, is also targeting business customers and is expecting a 10-20 per cent growth in 2001, according to chief executive Soren Schock Petersen.
