DISTRIBUTIVE GAINS? NOT QUITE- THE COMPANIES--BSES
Article Abstract:
BSES is a power distribution firm, which operates in northern suburbs of Mumbai. It has a retail base of around 1.81 million consumers. It owns a power plant at Dahanu, which has a capacity of 500 mw. It achieved plant load factor (PLF) of 85 percent in 1997-98 (73 percent in 1996-97). BSES plans to set up a 495 mw power plant at Palaghar in Maharashtra. The company is in the process of getting techno-economic clearance for the project. It also intends to set up projects outside Maharashtra, which include ST-BSES Coal Washeries, the 250 mw TICAPCO project in Tamil Nadu and 120 mw gas turbine project in Kerala. All these projects will be set up through joint ventures or subsidiaries. The pattern of BSES power supply consumption is; residential 53 percent, commercial 21 percent, industrial 25 percent and others 1 percent. The company has posted net profit of Rs112.73 crore on net sales of Rs912 crore in the first half of 1998-99. (gs)(psr)
