DIY tools in Italy

The economic difficulties in the Italy has not affected consumer spending on do-it-yourself (DIY) equipment which is predicted to increase by around 10%. The market for DIY tools was worth around L14,300 billion in 1996, with the electrical tools market valued at L600 billion. Some 84% of electric tools are imported mainly from Germany and the UK, with around 80% of total electrical tools sold from the 20,000 hardware shops in Italy. Some L3 billion is spent on advertising by the specialist DIY shops particularly on television. Gardening tools sales are valued at around L750 billion.

Fast food in Italy
Article Abstract:
The Italian fast food industry compromises mostly hamburger bars and there are some 4,300 quick service restaurants in the country. Fast food sales are estimated to total some 300 billion lire a year. The two leading fast food chains are Burgy with 74 restaurants and McDonald's with 27 outlets. Each fast food unit has an average turnover of 700 million lire and serves some 34,000 meals a year. Northern Italy, with 45% of the total population, is the main area of development for fast food outlets.

European spending on food is expected to grow only slowly in 1996 as part of the sluggish growth in overall consumer spending, but the situation could pick up in 1997. General food trends in Europe include rising expenditure on prepared foods, due to changing lifestyles and working patterns; and higher spending on 'healthy' foods such as fruit, vegetables and fish, at the expense of fat, sugar and meat. Article further discusses the European food and drink sector, according to country.
