Daewoo is South Korea's litmus test
Article Abstract:
South Korea's restructuring program cannot be called a success unless it leads to the overhaul of powerful chaebols that have gone bankrupt. The giant Daewoo conglomerate is a case in point. This chaebol, which had debts of $53.58 billion in 1998, is not expected to become solvent any time soon given the size of its debts. However, while regulators have announced plans to force the closure or sale of several Daewoo units, not much else seems to have been done to accelerate the restructuring of this particular chaebol.
