DaimlerChrysler to stand alone in Asia

DaimlerChrsyler AG's co-chairman Jurgen Schrempp expressed confidence that the company can compete in the Asian automotive marketplace by itself. The company withdrew its proposal to acquire Nissan Motor Co. of Japan. Mr. Schrempp said that Mercedes-Benz's distribution network in Asia and Chrysler's products would help DaimlerChrysler to reach its goal of deriving 25% of its revenues from Asia.

Ford, Rover to reduce output of some models

Automobile manufacturers Ford Motor Co. and Rover Group PLC, a subsidiary of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, have announced reductions in European production facilities. While Rover attributes the decision to seasonal demand fluctuations, Ford has stated that sales in Europe have been declining. Analysts have predicted that 1999 auto sales would be minor.
