BBDO takes stake in Japanese shop

BBDO Worldwide, the biggest advertising agency in the world, had acquired 20% in equity of advertising agency I&S Corp. of Japan. I&S is the eight-biggest advertising agency in its country and posted $116.6 million in income in 1997. BBDO chairman and CEO Alan Rosenshine indicated that BBDO needed to operate in Japan to maintain its global presence. BBDO takes two-thirds of its overall revenue from international markets. Meanwhile, Dentsu is seeking an alliance with Tempus, while Asatsu of Japan is scouting for a European partner.

The television industry has reported a significant increase in number of news programs offered in Japan as communications satellites proliferate and TV networks strengthen their bonds with high-ranking news organizations and broadcasters in the world. Terrestrial broadcasters in the country are vying for greater market shares by offering branded, repackaged news to cable and digital satellite platforms.
