Daylighting as a technology
Article Abstract:
Growing interest in the environment and energy has led to the development of daylighting as a technology, with design methods being developed to control and shape natural lighting. Daylighting systems include mirror systems, holographic diffracting systems, prismatic glazing, light shelves and heliostats and light pipes. Daylight technology can be used to reduce glare; control sunlight and make it an effective illuminant; improve daylight uniformity across a space; and boost daylight levels towards the rear of a deep space.

Bending the building: Full-sized timber and concrete building are receiving the testing treatment previously given to steel at BRE Cardington
Article Abstract:
Key issues being investigated with regard to full-sized timber and concrete buildings are disproportionate collapse, fire performance of staircases, masonry and timber movements, lateral stiffness and thermal and acoustic performance. The construction process itself is also being investigated, and the Timber Frame 2000 building comprises six storeys of platform-frame and large-panel construction. The seven-storey concrete frame is being tested for work on buildability, formwork, sourcing, and prefabrication.

Steel sheet goes structural: curved steel sheeting has been developed into a structural technology for roofs and composite floors. It will soon be available in the UK
Article Abstract:
Machine tools and design software have been developed to use curved sheet structurally. Zeman & Co of Austria has licensed the roof-sheet technology in several continental countries and it will be launched at Interbuild in November. Curved steel sheets have been used for industrial building rooves, and single skin sheets are often used for canopies and roofing stadia. It is also used for the soffit of composite flooring.
