Dealing with party walls: party wall legislation will apply throughout England and Wales from 1 July. What are the structural issues for low- and medium-rise buildings?
Article Abstract:
The Party Wall Act will come into force in July 1997 and will give building owners certain rights and obligations with regard to party walls. If a building owner wishes to demolish or redevelop a site or change the dimensions of a party wall, the work must not cause unnecessary inconvenience to the adjoining owner. A building owner must compensate the adjoining owner if there is any loss or damage. A building owner must first establish the nature and construction of a party wall, which would require opening up of the existing fabric. Consideration must also be given to vibrations, ground heave/settlement and temporary restraints.

When the earth moves: following 1995's drought, cracking of buildings is increasingly being reported
Article Abstract:
More cracked buildings are being reported following the 1995 drought, and subsidence claims are rising. Underpinning is used with greater circumspection than before for subsidence, due to its expense and the trauma involve for buildings and occupants. Buildings settle as the ground adjusts during construction and this is usually complete by the end of construction on rocks, gravels and sands. However settlement on clay, silt and peat can take several years.
