Death and the era of safety first
Article Abstract:
The architectural competition to find ways of making it harder to commit suicide by jumping off the Clifton suspension bridge highlights how social concerns have become entangled in building design. Buildings are now seen as a universe which can be controlled, and therefore tend to attract very strong feelings. In certain cases, this can be taken too far, as buildings and structures cannot be expected to determine the course of people's lives.

A lifetime's work made legible
Article Abstract:
The Royal Academy in London, England, is currently holding an exhibition of the work of architect Denys Lasdun. This covers a wide range of items, including drawings, models, film and photographs, and some of the exhibits will be new to many people. It looks at his work from 1932 to 1997, and is particularly interesting for the detail it gives about Lasdun's projects which were never actually built.

Luder looks to a new future despite problems of the past
Article Abstract:
Owen Luder, RIBA president, spoke of proposals to transform the RIBA into an umbrella organisation at an inaugural address at Portland Place. It is part of plans to co-operate with sister institutes and other industry organisations. He is in favour of architecture which reflects the contemporary spirit, and is critical of the way the planning system can inhibit good quality design.
