Defending the Union
Article Abstract:
The European Union (EU) is tackling its defense policy, and there is a need to focus on this issue due to Europe's role in kosovo, Yugoslavia, where a peacekeeping force is needed. Europe's defense has been geared to confrontation with the Warsaw pact, which no longer exists. The European Union is a strong player in peace time diplomacy, but could benefit from greater military strength. The EU also has to have the will to use its military muscle, and the 15 member countries will be responsible for defense unless the EU becomes a sovereign nation.

The EU turns its attention from ploughshares to swords
Article Abstract:
The European Union (EU) is discussing plans for a common defense force. The idea of setting up a rapid reaction corps has not been opposed, and it could tackle problems not serious enough for US attention, which still need to be tackled. There is a need for a division of labor to be agreed between the EU and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Operations in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, have shown some of the limitations of European defense resources, and the need for change.
