Acer to computerize schools in Turkey

Acer Inc., the largest computer maker in Taiwan, has received a contract to computerize schools in Turkey, according to a Central News Agency report. Under the contract, the company will supply computer hardware and software to Turkey's Ministry of Education and more than 600 education systems. According to the report, the company will be supplying about 12,000 personal computers to the Ministry of Education. Meanwhile, the World Bank will be granting US$2 billion to help computerize Turkey's education system.

Compaq to cut basic PC price to 575 euros

Compaq Computer Corp. introduced its consumer products for the fall and holiday seasons of 1999. The company also said it is planning to reduce basic PC prices from $699 to $599 (575 euros). Compaq will include software for three Internet access services in all of its personal computers. Compaq's entry-level price represents the lowest starting point for a new product at the company. Compaq is the largest seller of PCs in the US.
