Demand for health plans slips in 1997
Article Abstract:
Figures released by Laing & Buisson, the health specialist, have revealed that there has been a decline in the number of people taking out private medical insurance (PMI). In 1997 some 6.5mn people took out PMI some 200,000 less than in 1996. Since the recession of the early 1990's demand for PMI has slackened somewhat. In spite of the economy's recovery there has been no improvement in the PMI market. The future of PMI seems to lie within the company-paid PMI sector where the number of people covered by such schemes rose in 1997 by 200,000. This improved overall PMI figures to 6.9mn. A low rise in claims costs should result in lower PMI costs and price inflation. *
