Deng's distant vision: Shenzhen booms, but doubts persist over aims of reform
Article Abstract:
Years of economic growth spurred by its promotion as a primary industrial productivity and economic zone have built Shenzhen as an economic center. Shenzhen has proved an ideal economic experiment, prompting Deng Xiaoping to label it as the embodiment of economic reform initiatives at work. The entrepreneurial environment which fueled the mercurial economic growth and industrial expansion of the area has left, as of May 1992, a mere 50 square kilometers of land for development. Shenzhen has effectively served the purpose of giving Chinese business a laboratory for international ventures.

Hubs and spokes: SEZ plans ambitious road, rail network
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's role as the entry point of goods into China could be diminished in spite of the complementary relationship between Hong Kong and Shenzhen ports. Shenzhen's capacity as an international port could be vastly improved by plans for a rail system and road network. This transport scheme should be enhanced with a full-scale development plan for the ports, which operate below capacity due to natural and infrastructure constraints. Complementary trade could be maintained if Shenzhen concentrates on lower-priced goods, leaving Hongkong ports the business of upscale consumer goods.

The sweat shops nearby
Article Abstract:
The working conditions in the Shenzhen special economic zone are not reflected in the neighboring counties. In particular, workers in the nearby county of Baoan work for much lower pay, with neither contracts normedical benefits. Workers further suffer from poor safety conditions in the operation departments. Therefore, plans to include Baoan in the Shenzhen economic zone could effect changes in the labor policy, possibly raising both financial and health benefits of Baoan country laborers.
