Denmark: FLS plans to sell off non-core assets
Article Abstract:
FLS, the Danish industrial conglomerate, is struggling with a major debt and in order to diminish the debt the company is planning to sell off non-core assets. FLS Industries ceo Peter Assam says the company "will do something extraordinary to reduce the debt" and will evaluate all assets. The managing committee also aims to propose that no dividend on shares be paid out for 2001. FLS Aerospace, the aircraft maintenance unit of FLS, that was negatively affected by the September 11 terror attacks in the US, is not the only unit struggling with problems. The sales of construction material are on the decline in Poland and the US whereas the sales of asbestos cement sheeting in Denmark continue to fall.

DENMARK: HALF OF AALBORT PORTLAND TO BE SOLD?
Article Abstract:
British Blue Circle is likely to sell its 50% stake in the cement producer Aalbort Portland before the summer. Aalborg Portland Holding, that owns the other half of the company, has expressed interest in buying Blue Circle's share. For the company, that has so far been able to dispose of part of the surplus through the British company, this could mean a deterioration. The company may find it difficult to find buyers if domestic consumption is declining at the same time as the European market for cement is stagnating.

Denmark: Aalborg Portland's estimates not convincing
Article Abstract:
Aalborg Portland, the cement company, has not managed to convince Frank Aaen, the financial head of Enhedslisten, the political party, that the cement tax proposed by the government will entail a loss of 50-75 jobs for the company in the long term as cement sales are expected to drop due to the tax. Frank Aaen says he is not convinced of Aalborg Portland's calculations and aims to vote in favour of the government's proposal.
