Denmark: Pork exports to Japan soar
Article Abstract:
The value of Danish pork exports to Japan have soared - largely due to Japan's first case of the mad cow disease BSE. This means that Japan is developing into an even more lucrative market for Denmark. Danish pork exports to Japan are expected to climb from DKr5.7bn in 2000 to DKr7bn (US$843mn) in 2001. Head of the US Meat Export Federation's office in Japan says that beef sales in Japan have dropped by up to 30% in the past month while pork sales have risen by 20%. Pork prices on the Japanese market have also gone up from the equivalent of US$3.7 to US$5 per kilo.

DENMARK:PORK AND POULTRY PRICES EXPECTED TO RISE
Article Abstract:
Danish Crown sales manager Jens Haven Christiansen expects pork prices to rise in the domestic market this spring. He does not, however, believe the price will exceed DKr14/kg (US$1.6) as is expected in the German market, which is the biggest export market for Danish pork producers. Germany is the second biggest importer of Danish pork within the EU. Unlike other European consumers Danes have not changed their dietary habits so far following the BSE crisis.

Article Abstract:
Danish pork exports to Japan are estimated to reach a value of DKr 5.6bn (USD 0.65bn) in 2000, up from DKr 3.5bn in 1998 and DKr 4.8bn in 1999. The export volume is estimated at 220,000 tonnes. A factor behind the favourable situation is that neither Korea nor Taiwan operate on the market for the moment.
