Denmark: TeleCash of Germany to threaten PBS's monopoly
Article Abstract:
TeleCash, the leading supplier of electronic payments in Germany, is to start operations in Denmark in the near future. It will thus challenge PBS's monopoly position in the business. TeleCash has already set up a subsidiary in Copenhagen, TeleCash Danmark. According to Judith Haueblein, head of International Business Development in TeleCash, the only reason why the company is not operating at full speed in the country is that the Danish government prevents rivals from entering the market. Industry Minister Ole Stavad is to put forward a bill regarding the Dankort payment card before the Parliament by November 1. He will either propose that finance houses are permitted to demand compensation from the retail trade every time a Dankort payment card is used in retail stores or to maintain that finance houses via PBS have not yet enabled enough competition for payment transactions. TeleCash is owned by Deutsche Telekom.
