Denmark: Telia makes major losses in Denmark
Article Abstract:
Telia, the Swedish telecoms company, is not likely to recover its costs for the company's investments in Denmark, according to Borsen, the Danish finance daily. Telia ceo Marianne Nivert admits in an interview with Borsen that the company spent too much funds in wrong strategy in Denmark and the losses grew too big. This loss is estimated at between DKr3bn (US$361mn) and DKr4.5bn by sources near Telia. Marianne Nivert blames the former Danish management for the losses. Nivert is now set to boost profitability of Telia's Danish companies. She says that on hindsight it is possible that the company should have been more focused. Danish telecoms analysts are critical of Telia's strategy in Denmark. John Strand of Strand Consult says the first management was unprofessional and accuses the company of withdrawing funds when its mobile telephony operations finally started attracting customers. Michael Moesgaard Andersen compares Telia's Danish strategy to a zigzag strategy saying that it first focused on fixed net telephony, then switched over from this to mobile telephony targeting corporate clients and went over to focus on cash cards for mobile phones.

Denmark: Orange aims to boost earnings
Article Abstract:
Orange aims to turn its DKr920mn loss last year to a profit of around DKr1.5bn a year in the 2004-2007 period. This means that the telecoms company's investments in Denmark amounting to around DKr4bn (US$481mn) so far will pay for themselves by the end of 2007. According to Orange MD Monique Moulle-Zetterstrom, the company will have a high operating margin and a turnover that is perhaps three times as high as today. She also points out that Orange is better equipped to cope with the competition than Telia, whose Danish investments are at about the same level as Orange's. Orange has a client base of 600,000 already whereas Telia ceo Marianne Nivert is set to make a profit in Denmark with a client base of 500,000. Telecoms analysts are skeptical about Orange's plans and say it is going to be extremely difficult for the company to live up to the target of the investments paying for themselves by 2007.
