Denmark: Tobacco companies successful
Article Abstract:
Tobacco production continues to be a profitable business in Denmark despite numerous ethical discussions about the moral aspects of tobacco production. Orlik Tobacco, the Danish tobacco company 50% owned by Skandinavisk Tobak, boosted its turnover in 2000/2001 from DKr506mn (US$60.9mn) to DKr574mn whereas profit after tax remains unchanged at DKr102mn. Orlik's exports climbed from DKr160mn to DKr229mn. Orlik is thus among the most profitable companies in Denmark. Mac Baren Tobacco Company has also boosted its profits in the past fiscal and is anticipating an even brighter future due to its deal with Swedish Match to produce smoking tobacco, which will double its production. Family-owned Harald Halberg Holding reports a DKr50mn profit after tax, up DKr12mn on the previous fiscal.

DENMARK: SKANDINAVISK TOBAK'S INTERIM RESULTS
Article Abstract:
Skandinavisk Tobakskompagni, the Danish tobacco group, reports a DKr 1,033mn (USD 137mn) pre-tax profit for the first six months of the fiscal 1999/2000, up from DKr 1,000mn in 1998/99. MD Jorgen Tandrup said the company had estimated at DKr 150mn decline in profit owing to reduced duty-free sales, but this effect was compensated for by a 6.4% increase in cigarette sales in Denmark, increased border trade and sales to airlines and a considerable growth on the Polish market.
