Denmark: Unexploited potential in Oresund bridge link
Article Abstract:
There is a considerable unexploited commercial potential on the Oresund bridge, says Claus Lynge Christensen, the regional manager for Scandinavia at Swiss Hupac Intermodal SAS, one of the leading companies for combined road/rail transports in Europe. According to Lynge Christensen, the potential lies in the 400,000 trucks that annual take the ferry across the Oresund Sound between Trelleborg in Sweden and Germany. Germany will offer a major market as the country is to introduce a new road tax for trucks next year and the industry will focus more on the use of railroads in cargo transports. He says an incentive is required in order to attract companies to use rail transport as trucks are a much more flexible means of transport. Lynge Christensen urges Danish politicians to reduce the bridge toll paid by cargo trains by 50%. This could bring about a ten-fold increase in the number of cargo trains crossing the Oresund bridge, and generate bigger earnings without making tax-payers pay for the losses on the link.

Denmark:Exhaust emissions from road traffic remain high
Article Abstract:
According to the Danish Statistical Office, pollution caused by car exhaust emissions is gradually getting worse and the CO2 emissions from road traffic have grown by 20% in the past ten years. The number of passenger cars has risen by 16% in the past ten years, which has eliminated the reduction in CO2 emissions caused by more environment-friendly vehicles. One of the reasons why the number of cars on the roads is rising is the fact that using a car is not more expensive today than what it was 20 years ago.
