Austria's second-biggest electrical and electronics retailer K ck/Cosmos, aims to recover within two years the Sch 160mn investments it made following the merger of Cosmos and K ck. The company has relaunched its 21 outlets after a facelift. The number of staff was reduced from 950 to 750, while another 70 are employed by K ck Service GmbH. The product range was extended with PCs, telecom equipment, new media, CDs and photo business. In the medium term these products should contribute 30% to turnover. The improved after-sales service also includes a customer hotline, a best-price guarantee, optional extended guarantee periods, equipment hire, and a company-owned repair shop. In cooperation with Easybank, K ck/Cosmos launched a customer card which, similar to MasterCard, can be used for payments worldwide. In the 1997/98 fiscal year K ck/Cosmos had a turnover of Sch 4.4bn, which is about half of that of the market leader Mediamarkt-Saturn. Austrian Energy (AE) of Vienna, a subsidiary of the VA Technologie AG (VA Tech) of Linz, is to become the member of a worldwide energy technology partnership by the end of 1998. VA Tech's director general Othmar P hringer says that AE, a supplier of equipment for thermal energy technology, is to contribute to the partnership about one-third of its annual turnover of Sch 6bn. The partnership will involve also VA Tech's interests in waste incineration plant and the pipeline interests of VA MCE
