Design gains wear thin in Spain
Article Abstract:
The Spanish fashion industry has failed to live up to the promise it showed in the early 1980s. Although fashion has matured into a major industry that now accounts for 6% of Spanish GNP, the industry has failed to develop a strong international presence despite having designers who are considered to be as innovative as those in France and Italy. The plight of the Spanish fashion trade is as much attributable to a weak textiles industry as to the commercial inexperience of Spain's leading designers. As a result, Spanish fashion houses have been slowly squeezed out of both the European market and the domestic Spanish market, with the French and the Italians dominating the high end of the markets and East Asian competitors grabbing up much of the lower end of the markets. Not surprisingly, Spain's trade deficit in clothing soared to 68 billion pesetas in 1990, up from three billion pesetas in 1985.

Suddenly hip Spain
Article Abstract:
Spain's economy has risen greatly in the last 30 months. Inflation has been reduced, and the fiscal deficit is now only three percent of GNP. This year's expected growth rate is almost twice the European average, at 4.5%. Construction output in Spain is increasing faster than in any other European country. Spain's main economic problem is still its 20% unemployment rate, which is Europe's highest. Foreign companies are being welcomed to Spain because they bring technology, higher wages, better quality products, and their competition may energize stagnant local firms. Spain will be a full member of the Economic Community in 1992, and takes this economic challenge seriously.

El sobrepaso
Article Abstract:
Spain's society has changed greatly since Franco's death. The fertility rate has come way down, putting far less strain on the social infrastructure. Spaniards are obsessed with reaching European standards for wealth, and indicators show they are very close to achieving that.
