Designing robust emergency medical service via stochastic programming

Article Abstract:

The planning and management problems of health care are attributed to new developments in medical technology, innovations in health care delivery, changes in consumer needs and expectations. A stochastic programming model is proposed in solving the problem of designing and planning the emergency medical service (EMS) system. The validity of the proposed model is examined in dealing with the trade-off between quality of service and costs management.

Optimizing steady state Markov chains by state reduction

Article Abstract:

Markov chains in the equilibrium state are used to evaluate the different parameters that influence of different classes of service systems. The derivatives of the chances are obtained from the chains with respect to every parameter via state reduction. This approach reduces the computational complexity of the problem and allows careful selection of the parameters that will maximize rewards.

How likely is it that a run of poor outcomes is unlikely?

Article Abstract:

A method is illustrated for estimating the probability of occurrence of a run of poor surgical outcomes within some larger sequence of operations. The findings indicate that apparently poor runs of outcome would be encountered purely as a chance occurrence.
