Pole position ploys
Article Abstract:
Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohammad's call for unity has failed to suppress the struggle for succession to prime minister between senior leaders of the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO). The main contender in the 1993 election is deputy PM Ghafar Baba, whose position may be challenged by Mohammad's plan to serve another term and the rising popularity of senior VP Anwar Ibrahim. Meanwhile, revelations about the corrupt practices of senior leaders by the opposing factions within UMNO itself, may lead to the defeat of the party in the coming election.

Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad has reiterated his opposition to making the Nov 1993 election for deputy president of his governing United Malays National Organisation (Umno) a matter for open political dispute. Supporters of Finance Minister and Umno Vice-Pres Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim want to contest Deputy Prime Minister Ghafar Baba's election as deputy president, an important position.
