Disarray in the ranks
Article Abstract:
The Malaysian state of Sabah faces political instability as its chief minister, Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, stands accused of corruption. Pairin is the leader of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), which left the national ruling coalition to join Semangat '46, an opposition coalition. The ruling United Malays National Organization (Umno) is trying to regain control of the state and is hoping that a Sabah court will overturn an anti-party-hopping law. If that happens, PBS could split and fresh elections would take place. It is, however, unlikely that Umno will win the projected Sabah elections without spending a lot of money.

Local hero: drive to topple Sabah leader stalls
Article Abstract:
Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad and his United Malays National Organisation (Umno) failed to oust Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan as chief minister of Sabah state. Mohamad accused Pairin and his United Sabah Party (PBS) of wanting to remove Sabah from the Malaysian federation. Mohamad suffered a setback when another opposition group, the United Sabah National Organisation (Usno), allied itself with Pairin's PBS rather than with Umno. The Malaysian government is also prosecuting Pairin for corruption. His trial, which started in Jan 1992, is still in progress.

Trips to trouble: press campaign lands mayor out of office
Article Abstract:
The New Straits Times published a report alleging misuse of funds for the purchase of 22 Volvos by Tan Sri Elyas Omar, the long-serving mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, leading to his resignation on Sep 1, 1992. Government officials threatened to prosecute sources who leaked the information, under the Official Secrets Act. The incident highlighted the need for redefining the scope of press freedom and the Official Secret Act as first the press was pressurized politically, to publish the scandal and subsequently, was facing prosecution for dealing in official secrets.
