Do oil and vinegar mix?
Article Abstract:
In the business sector, strategic alliances are increasingly being used in order that companies can optimize their assets without increasing their risks. Many firms are seeking joint venture partners in order to remain competitive. A proposed joint venture between an unnamed northern European packaging company, called for these purposes, Oil, and its southern European counterpart, known as Vinegar, is described and the problems they encountered by overlooking their long-term compatibility are discussed.

Making mergers and acquisitions work
Article Abstract:
Global merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in 1998 amounted to $2.4 trillion, up 50% from 1997. In Europe, most M&A activity has been fuelled by privatization and deregulation, while conglomerates have sought to refocus on their core activities. A successful alliance can be seen as one that increases the share value of both seller and bidder, which can only occur if the market believes that the value of the merged company is greater than that of the two separate parties.

Back on the corporate agenda?
Article Abstract:
Many companies have turned to strategic alliances as a means of expansion as economic conditions have worsened during the 1990s. However, some observers have forecast that this trend will decline following economic revival and the recovery of global markets more recently. This will not necessarily be the case, as many companies now see strategic alliances as playing a key role in assisting their expansion in non-core areas.
