DoE to open door to high-risk work
Article Abstract:
The Department of the Environment (DoE) is proposing changes to funding procedures for social housing that may offer more high-risk work for architects. Under the proposals, housing association and local authority housing programmes will be combined into a single strategy for each local authority area. This will lead to more schemes competing for funds controlled by the DoE and may offer work for architects to work up housing association schemes. Local authorities will also want to employ private consultants. The Royal Institute of British Architects wants design guidelines to guarantee quality standards for social housing.

The sites are in Maidstone, Rochester, Gravesend, Charing and Canterbury and have a variety of features and problems.
